Os "Borracheiros"

“The room of the wine carriers”.

Most of Madeira’s Island`s vineyards are found on the steep slopes of the mountains. Here the grapes are collected, by hand and pressed locally in the so-called “lagar”. After pressingthe grapes the wine was transported in Borracho a traditional transport made of goat skin at the time. Each Borracho weighed about 50 kg. And was carried by the so-called Borracheiros. Strong men who performed travelling more than 20km a day history says these men halt at any given time to have some wine and to lighten the load for this reason they were called Borracheiros this form of transport was used during centuries.

Casa do Palheiro

“house of the haystack”

Back in the day this building was full of hay, and that was precicesly as the locals liked their room. Like this used to be the shelter for cattle. Madeira’s volcanic soil is very fertile, but centuries of agriculture has begun to take it toll on the land. Cattle still play a big role in Madeiran agriculture today, as their manure plays a big roll in fertilizing our land.
